I just want to write a short and sweet post.

I found some things out about… someone that I had known online (and am wishing that Facebook would have shown me these things in the algorithm sooner, or that people would have reached out to me telling me rather than assume that I knew about them and did not care about them), and as a result I chose to unfriend that person, block that person, and excise them from my life… even if it was “just online”. Perhaps the biggest “line in the sand” that I have is abusive contact toward another individual, especially when the person does not take responsibility for their own actions, feel remorseful for them and take active steps toward changing the thought processes that led up to that behavior — even still, it is a deep line in the sand simply for happening. I do not want to surround myself with people who… have engaged in these behaviors or are engaging in these behaviors without the already mentioned remorse and responsibility. For someone to want my trust refusing to divulge this to me is a violation of the trust that I had previously placed in them.

That is all that I’m going to say for now because I want to, and do, respect the person that this happened to.

It’s a little bit too early to be threatening violence.

I couldn’t begin to get enough screenshots of my… experience lurking in the official Hogwarts Legacy server (and that is how the name of the game is written, correct?), but this one stood out to me the most for what should be obvious reasons. If it wasn’t people stressing themselves out to the point of sickness over hiding their consumption of the game from others — their friends groups perhaps being the most prominent — comments like these were made. This says everything that needs to be said about this game, and I wish everyone an incredibly happy save yourself money refusing to line JK Rowling’s pockets not buying this…

I came, I saw, and none of it surprised me at all.

So, yesterday I joined the official Hogwarts Legacy server on Discord.

I have no intention of buying or playing the game because of JK Rowling’s anti-Semitic, transphobic remarks (nor do I have any intention of funding the franchise in any way, shape, or form), but I wanted to see the excuses that people were coming up with to justify playing this game. And let me tell you… I saw a lot of them. I also saw a lot of good people coming onto the server to try to spread awareness about why we should not collectively be lining the pockets of someone who has said these things who will go on to donate proceeds to anti-trans charities like she’s admitted to in the past, even though the majority of those people got banned from the server because people want to continue to keep up whatever flimsy pretenses they have to in order to justify continued consumption of this game. One of the things that I saw that bothered me, and stuck with me, was how guilty a lot of people felt about continuing to consume JK Rowling’s work in light of these comments being public knowledge, how they were desperate for other people not to find out about this, and how it was in many cases literally making them sick. If someone is such a bad person that consuming their media makes you have this kind of reaction, you need to consider… well, not consuming it.

At this point, it’s worthwhile making friends out of the people willing to risk being banned from the server for speaking up, as is it worthwhile to continue to inform people as to why they should not play this game or partake in any more media consumption from JK Rowling. That’s about it, though. The rest is not worth it.
