What even is a Steam boot loop anyway?

I didn’t even know that Steam boot looping was a thing… until I could not for the life of me get Steam to load so that my family could continue to enjoy the games we’ve invested into. You know, the ones we’ve paid for.

Then I had to use our Steam Deck to get back into the account, but the only reason that was successful was because I had to uninstall everything Steam-related from the desktop computer which was also the one that was giving us trouble. Several days after the fact James’ games are almost completely reloaded back onto the desktop (“gaming PC”), and this is something that I wish we never have to experience again if for no more of a reason than the expansive size of my son’s computer game collection and the length of time it involves leaving the computer on for days and nights to slowly but surely re-download, even if it’s plugged directly into the back of the modem for this reason. Times like these make me even more annoyed than I already am the fact that Steam essentially has a monopoly on the computer gaming franchise as a whole.

You may not like Steam, but at the end of the day to effectively game on the computer you need to use it.

One Steam boot loop and a lot of time later…

Since our Steam account got stuck in a boot loop that I consider us very lucky to get out of, I’ve been having to download all of my son’s games back to the computer again… not like I haven’t had to reload parts of his collection before but this has got to be the most thorough re-upload I have ever done and that is annoyingly saying something. With any luck, this won’t take too long and I will have James’ games loaded back onto his computer in a matter of days… I’m hoping that Steam doesn’t draw this out any more than is necessary if you get me. Truth be told, I’m surprised it took us more than a decade to encounter a boot loop if you get me.

I’ll come back and write more about it in the coming days as his games continue to reload on his computer.

I am finally beginning to round the corner!

I had to fix some issues that James’ desktop computer had begun to give me, and part of those issues had to do with wiring that needed to be replaced and rerouted, so… here we are. I’m preparing to backdate the last few days’ worth of posts into this journal and call it a day. But my son’s computer is back to functioning as it should be, even though I’m having to re-download all of his Steam games since Steam got stuck on a loading loop. Given how many games my son owns this has and is going to be annoying until all of them are reinstalled back onto the computer, but my kid is happy to simply have his games back at his fingertips so…

One of James’ hard drives predictably bit the dust.

It’s something that can be worked around although it will definitely be replaced, but most of today was spent investigating one of James’ external hard drives that almost continually disconnected from the computer (which made downloading games to it, updating games on it or even gaming on it an absolute pain). I checked the cord that hooked it up to the computer as well as the power cord, both of whom seemed to be functioning well as evidenced and proven by being able to hook other 8TB HDDs in the house up to them without a problem. I took the hard drive out of the casing and put it into some other casing I had and it still… wouldn’t work, even though it sounded like it was continuing to go to search for the drive in question or data on the drive. I am now downloading the games of James’ that were on that hard drive to another one that I happened to have lying around the house, which will take some time but is already going so much more smoothly than any and all attempts to use the 8TB HDD he had been using up to yesterday for that.

Truth be told the drive had been giving me issues prior to yesterday, but they were fairly sporadic issues.
